Billboard

For the creation of my billboard, I chose the location of the local woods that my drama was based off since this would represent the premise of my show. The location of the woods for a photo shoot was inline with safety and permission checks. I created a risk assessment and evaluated the safety of the woods with hazards such as falling branches and uneven ground and concluded it was safe. I proposed a consent form to the actor I used in the billboard to make sure I was in line with ethical requirements. As well as this, the woods I used is public grounds meaning no permission was needed for filming. I made sure that the background of my billboard had no members of the public in the background that did not consent. The lighting conditions for this shoot were dark and cloudy instead of overly sunny. This was beneficial for my final product since I was aiming for a dark and shot full of shadows since this created an eeriness to the billboard which would represent the horror genre in my TV show.   I sent my photo into my unit 20 rushes folder and imported it into affinity photo. I created a new document as an A3 print file. Once imported, I edited features such as the exposure to make the shot darker and added shadows. As well as this, I added red footsteps into the shot using the paint tool, I layered these colours on-top of the shot and added a blur effect to them to blend them to look like footsteps. The composition  of my billboard has a lone character in the centre of the shot surrounded by woods to connote the loneliness of the show, representing the theme in my show of the gradual killing off of the characters until the final one. The placement of the title is also central in my Billboard, it uses a serif font My final export was a high resolution pdf file in minimum 300 dpi since this makes is good for print due to the high res. The software of affinity photo is industry standard in the production of a billboard since it is easy to manipulate layers in the billboard and editing as well as giving a wide variety of templates. I used a print A3 template for my billboard

Radio trailer

I created my radio trailer on Ableton Live lite 11, a music production software where mp3 clips can be used as well as allowing for recording into the software with the use of a microphone. I created a unit 20 rushes folder on my personal desktop to house all the downloaded audio clips that I needed as well as the audio clips I recorded myself.  Some of the clips I downloaded for the trailer needed certain editing such as shortening the clips of cutting out the middle of the audio to shorten it which I did for the sound effect of a can opening and pouring. The beginning of my radio trailer included downloaded audio of running footsteps and panting, these clips needed editing by speeding the clips up since this made them more in line with what I wanted to demonstrate the horror elements of my show in the radio trailer. In the creation of the radio trailer, I created multiple audio tracks on the timeline to have clips simultaneously playing at once. The choices I made in the edit of my trailer were changes such as the audio levels of the components where I made sure to balance the volume of the clips to make sure there was emphasis on certain audio such as the voice lines or a scream. I made editing decisions such as the use of silence after the opening sequence to further emphasise the demonstration of the horror aspect of my TV shown by letting the listener sit in silence after the scream before the radio trailers continues. For the creation of my radio trailer, I had to consider legal and ethical issues to consider. I created talent consent forms for my voice actors as written permission to use them in my radio trailer. My trailer used many outsourced audio sound effects, I used pixabay for these to ensure they were royalty and copyright free so there was no fee and created an assets table to centralise my clips. For the recording of my clips, I showed the voice actors the script beforehand so the actors could practise to make sure they were correct and had the correct intonation and that parentheses were correctly used. I used a quiet room for recording the voice lines and tested volume levels to make sure it was not peaking so the clips did not become distorted. The final export was 48khz with a bit depth of 16 which is industry standard. I exported the radio trailer to an Final Cut pro and added a BBC3 logo for an MP4 version of my trailer that can be used on Youtube and instagram and compressed it into a H264 to make it easier to embed and transport.

How music changes film

This is a project I worked on to show how music can change the emotion of a character in film. This clip is from Fantastic Mr Fox in the opening scene where Mrs fox announces she is pregnant. The first edited clip uses the song Don't Let Me Down by the Beatles. I used this song to change the scene with Mr fox being demonstrated as nervous and scared due to the music. The lyrics of "don't let me down" in this clip shows the exact emotions Mr Fox could be feeling in this scene as he does not want to be let down by recent news. In the second clip, I used the song Carless Whisper by George Micheal to demonstrate a romantic emotion. This song shows Mr Fox to be excited about the news of pregnancy as well as romantic attachment to Mrs Fox. This is aided by the fame of this particular song which is generally considered a romantic song, thus making it perfect to convey that particular emotion. The final clip uses a very dramatic song to show the negative emotions Mr Fox has of the recent news. This song is very dramatic thus showing that Mr Fox is scared and potentially even somewhat angry.

Changing the genre of a pre sourced clip

This is an edit I did in my own time in order to better understand the tropes of genre and how to portray them on-screen. |The original clip seen in this footage is a simple dolly down a corridor in a library, the lighting is bright with smooth camera tracking. The genre I chose for this mini-project was to change it to horror. To do this, I reduced the exposure to make the shot darker and changed the colour balance to a have a red hue. This change allowed the footage to be more inline with the horror genre since the darkness adds tension do to the physical change of limited visibility as well as being in line with the trope of horror footage often being dark and moody. Furthermore, I added music to the clip to increase the tension, this music is very stereotypically horror esque with low pitched uncomfortable sound and ambience making the scene scarier. Slowing the clip down further made it scarier since, by extending the time the audience is placed under the harsh environment of watching the clips with the other changes made, the tension builds as the camera moves down the corridor.

Script writing coursework

For my year 13 coursework, I was tasked with analysing multiple different script types so I could write a screenplay to an extract of a TV drama we had created for BBC 3. This meant the drama must be in line with BBC 3 ethos and style as well as being focussed on the target audience of 16- 21 year olds. My TV drama fell under the horror drama genre and was centred around a group of teenagers on a camping trip in the summer post exams.

As well as this, my year 13 coursework included script writing for trailers as advertising. I created a TV trailer script and radio trailer script as pre production documents for the advertisement of the TV show I created. I used the information I gathered from the previous script writing  analysis work.
