Unit 21- response to brief

 

My client has asked me to create an episodic drama series for the BBC3 tv channel. This brief has certain explicit non negotiable  requirements to it. For example, the show I create must not exceed the age rating of 15 and must comply with all Ofcom regulations. This means that I must proceed with caution when I am creating an idea for the show as well as how the show will take place and avoid any extremely gory or sexual scenes. Some of the aspects of the show I will have creative control over meaning I can decide what will happen, for example I am allowed to choose the sub genre however there is a non negotiable which is that it must be a drama. Other considerations for the TV series are that the target audience of the show is 16-21 which I will keep since the demographic is already niche therefore there is no reason to make it any smaller. The ethos of the channel is transgressive and edgy therefore I will abide to this style.

Unit 21-BB3 research

 The British Broadcasting Corporation is a British  company based in London founded in 1920. They are the largest broadcaster in the world employing over 200,000. BBC3 is a subsection of the BBC dedicated to TV series showing from 9-4 in the evening with a target audience of 16-34 year olds. BBC3 was founded in 2003 and was later terminated in 2016. Recently in February 2022 BBC3 was re launched. The style of series on BBC3 are typically transgressive and edgy due to the young target audience since this would appeal to them. Some of the popular shows are based around this ethos such as killing eve and fleabag.

A television drama is a show intended to have a serious tone to it. The genre of "drama" can have many sub genres such as crime drama, teen drama or comedy. The main conventions of a television drama would be

Some conventions of a drama TV series include the episode structure. Typical drama episodes convey a story through relatively long episodes from 30-60 minutes. This technique is effective in appealing to the audience due to the episodes being typically shorter than a film meaning the audiences attention is kept over the episodes. TV dramas typically have a first pilot episode so a company can review it and then decide whether the show should continue. The characters in a TV drama are crucial to the story.

This graph demonstrates that BBC 3 is not in any of the top watched Tv series. This is likely due to the fact that BBC 1 has more of a focus on mainstream audience for example the target audience is a wider audience of people who are more likely to sit down and watch a show when it comes out live rather that watch it on demand in their free time. The target audience of BBC 3 is 16-34 year olds, this means that they will have less free time due to work, school, or friends to watch shows when they air. This means the numbers for BBC3 shows will be lower as the target audience are more likely to watch the how when it comes out on BBC Iplayer

This shot is unusable due to being too dark. In this shot you cannot see the subject since there was no lighting and the ISO was too low.

 

This shot was once again too dark as well as the camera focusing on the snare drum instead of the hi hat cymbal. This meant that the shot had to be re- taken with correct focus and ISO

This shot is unusable since it was not inline with the storyline of the music video after I changed the narrative meaning it had to be scrapped.

To organise my Folder, I created sub folders so I could organise all of the footage I gathered on filming days. This is compromised of a final clips and raw footage. I used the raw footage folder to place all of the footage in that I had gathered on the SD card. I then watched through all of the shots to find those that were useable and dragged and dropped them into the final clips which I would later import into Final Cut Pro.

For my first edit, the first task was to import all of my shots into final cut pro from my final clips file. Firstly, I dragged and dropped the first clips in that take place before the music comes in so that I could align the start of the music with where it should come in in relation to the shots. When the music came in, I aligned the music with where it should come in using the trim function then added other shots in of car. To align the performance of the guitar with the music, firstly I muted the audio of the song and used the audio from the clip and trimmed the clip down so it started where the riff I started then dragged it to the rough position of where the guitar part started in the song then cut the clip before it down so that it was timed perfectly.

For my footage, I added all of the footage that I had in so that the timeline could be almost full. After this, I changed the timing of all the shots so that the lip syncing matched up as well as the guitar and drum parts. I did this by using the same techniques as before. 

Some of the shots I filmed were from a different day meaning the conditions were different. This affected the shots since in this example there was less light due to different weather conditions which meant that there was no consistency between the look of the shots. To fix this I increased the saturation on the shot since the different conditions meant that the shot looked dull with less popping colours. The increase in total saturation(left most slider) made the shot close to the look of the first shoot. I then increased the highlights to improve the small features of the shot including the bushes in the side

The original shots had a slight blue hue to the shots. To replicate this, I pulled the colour wheel towards blue slightly so it would look like the other shots

Due to the difference in light, I increased the exposure slightly to make the shot slightly lighter so it would replicate the previous shots

For the final edit I decided to add a filter to all the shots to add an edgier feel to the video and also to further match all of my shots to have a similar look. This keeps the continuity of my music video since it doesn't show the difference in the shots that are otherwise relatively obvious to spot          

This export was a high quality export that is not for YouTube due to the large file size

On this day I shot footage I needed of the first part of the storyline that included robbers fleeing from a house with shots of cars driving quickly. This shoot had no health and safety issues for me as the camera man since the car was never driving directly towards where I was filming it with the tripod. there was however some slight health and safety issues for the actors in the car due to potential crashes. To overcome this, I made sure that that the actors had seatbelts on at all times. To protect the safeguarding of pedestrians on the road I made sure to inform any people walking past that we were filming and turned the camera off and did not film until after they were out of site or were unidentifiable to keep their consent and protect their identity. The bumpy pavement and road was also a factor I had to think about since there was a risk of falling over, the only way I could overcome this hazard was to

When using the camera I used the proper techniques to attach the camera to the tripod which was important to the success of my music video since the pavement of the road we were filming on was not flattest and was relatively bumpy

This shoot was successful because we managed to film all the shots needed for this location

The location I chose to film this section in is a suburban street that has very few cars pass come through. This meant it was suitable to film in because it meant we could have long filming session while not being interrupted by cars constantly driving past. As well as this, this particular street is very open with few trees around, this meant that there was lots of natural sunlight that we could use.

On this day we used a music room that is full of drums and other instruments to provide a logical and fun back ground to my close up shots. In this shooting session we did not manage to film all of the shots we needed to film. The shots we didn't film were the close up lip syncing. This was due to a lack of microphone and stand. Despite this we filmed some practice shots so we could get the lighting correct. The room we were in was relatively dark which made some of the shots grainy. To overcome this, I increased the ISO on the camera to 800 so it seemed lighter and I set up 2 phone torches to rest against the drum kits so they pointed at where the close up was happening. To film this, I directed the camera man to use manual focus and we used the technique of placing the camera far back and then zooming in, this gave the shots a more animated feel. To ensure I was playing the guitar parts correctly, I learned all the parts I was filming beforehand. During the filming, I would listen to the song on a phone speaker to ensure they were timed correctly which would make it a lot easier to edit in the future and meant I wouldn't have to speedup or slow down the footage in post production. To film the drum parts we used the same lighting rig and camera techniques. This shoot did not have many health and safety issues apart from potential injuries from a falling tripod. To overcome this potential risk, I made sure that the tripod was secure and stable before and after mounting the camera to it

This location is a music room at Ilkley grammar school which meant that it was very suitable for our purposes. This room had multiple musical instruments that I could use for my music video such as guitars and drums. As well as this, the room had multiple easily accessible plug sockets so it was easy to set up lighting rigs

19/01/23

On this day I filmed the lip syncing to my music video in the same drum room as on the 11th. Because of this, the shoot went better than the previous since we knew the layout of the room and the good places to put the camera. To overcome the problem we had of the room being too dark we borrowed a light from school to provide extra light. This was very helpful and lead to a good shot however it was  a health risk to the actor since it was very bright. To overcome this, I positioned the camera to the side of the actor not only so it was safer but also since it led to better lighting.  As well as this, to avoid grainy footage we used a different camera of higher quality. I set up the light on the front right side of the actor to hopefully get a slight shadow on the left side of his body but keeping his face fully lit. The light I used had 2 settings, a yellow and a white light that could individually be turned up. I decided that the yellow light was better for this situation to give a warmer effect when the room lights were off instead of the harsh white light.  The potential health and safety hazards were the same as the other shoot so I took the same precautions with the camera and also with the microphone stand due to similar reasons.

24/01/23

On this day I filmed the rest of the car shots that I needed to fill in the gaps of my music video. To film this, I did hand held filming while driving in the passenger seat of a car. I decided to hold the camera to save the time that would be wasted on setting up a tripod. The same health hazards and risks apply to the first shoot

Camera settings used

Across the whole filming process the camera settings that stayed the same was the shutter speed which stayed at 1/50 and the white balance which remained on auto. The ISO setting was changed on different days.  On the days we filmed outside we used a relatively high ISO setting (up to 800) because the only lighting was natural lighting from the sky which was quite dim, this meant to get a brighter shot we needed a high ISO. On the days we filmed inside we used a lower ISO (below 800) since we could use lights plugged in at the mains.
